New pregnancy referral

Early access to maternity care is important to ensure that all the appropriate care options are discussed with you, including all antenatal screening options.  This is important for you and your baby’s health

You can do this by either:

Get in touch with your local midwife

You can also see your local midwife at your GP and they will send a referral for you.

Once the referral has been sent, you will be offered a booking appointment, usually within two weeks, with a midwife.

Your pregnancy care may be based with you community midwife, in the hospital antenatal clinics, or a mixture of both. This is dependent on where you live and whether you have any pre-existing medical conditions.

If you have any concerns prior to seeing your midwife on your first appointment such as bleeding or pain, please contact the Emergency Gynaecology Unit, Ward F16 at Wythenshawe Hospital, please call 0161 291 2561.

Antenatal Clinic (for Salford patients)

The Saint Mary’s team runs a general Antenatal Clinic at Lance Burn Health Centre for women who live in the Salford area. Midwives and Consultant Obstetricians will review patients throughout their pregnancy and refer them to specialist clinics as appropriate.

  • Normal pregnancy.
  • Complicated pregnancies requiring consultant input.
  • Pre-existing diabetes and gestational diabetes.
  • Hypertension, chronic renal disease.
  • Epilepsy in pregnancy.

What is offered to the patient?

Multi-disciplinary input:

  • Diabetes – Consultant Obstetrician with an interest in diabetes, Consultant Diabetologist, Diabetic specialist, Nurse, Diabetic Specialist Midwife.
  • Renal disease – Consultant Obstetrician with an interest in renal disease, Consultant Renal Physician.
  • Epilepsy – Consultant Obstetrician with an interest in epilepsy, Epilepsy specialist nurse.
  • Fetal medicine clinic – amniocentesis, Consultant sonographic assessment of pregnancy.
